When Sonia Cabrales-Rueda came to Canada from Columbia three years ago, she knew she’d face some challenges: a new country, a different language, and a culture she knew little about.
Instead of doing what many others in that situation do and seek out their own communities as a way to combat the anxieties and stresses of trying to fit in with their new surroundings, Sonia, and her husband Oscar, chose a different path.
“We recognized that we had to immerse ourselves in the Canadian culture,” says Sonia. “We had to challenge ourselves to understand it. It’s different. Canadian culture is very different.”

Second Career student returns to class after 36 years
Donna Muir always wanted to go back to school. In January she got her wish.
After 36 years of being embarrassed by her lack of formal education, Donna took advantage of Ontario’s Second Career Program and enrolled in Mohawk’s Office Administration – Executive program, and started classes in January.
Coming back to school has been an eye-opening experience for Donna, but after all she’s been through in life, she’s pretty confident that she’ll succeed.
At 16, Donna dropped out of high school. She married at 17, had her first child at 19 and her second at 20. She suddenly became a single mother at 26 and the sole provider to her two young children.
Life wasn’t easy for Donna and her kids but she persevered, working as many jobs as she needed to provide for her family, while trying to be best mother she could be to her kids. She never missed a baseball game, a school play or gymnastic competition.
